I read the article, but it really comes alive when you see the videos.

Though maybe it’s a bit less surprising he can do all this when he’s so close and touchy. Lesson learned: if a dude is touching your lapel, NO POCKET IS SAFE.

You can spot Derren mirroring his victim’s actions to gain trust, stepping away to get his victim to follow, the weird almost handshake thing which seems to flummox him further, and then the interrupted handshake. *Apparently* this last thing is very important – Derren doesn’t shake his hand, but puts in his other hand, then immediately asks for things. I understand that the interrupted handshake makes people susceptible, as something they took for granted is suddenly not happening.

I wouldn’t dare try it, though.

That guy’s cool, but Derren Brown can do some pretty cool things with misdirection as well as pickpocketing – here’s one video of him doing that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOdYgEDSm7E and I can’t find the right video on YouTube but he once pickpocketed a guy of all his stuff, the guy came back and got his stuff back and then got confused into giving it all back to Derren a second time! But pickpocketing is just one of the many things he uses his powers for.
